Brittany Renner Sparks Outrage After Ditching Hijab

Brittany Renner’s spiritual detour has hit a hard left and people are not holding back.

The Basketball Wives star, known for her unfiltered takes and headline-grabbing love life, is once again in the hot seat after trading her modest, faith-driven wardrobe for the skin-baring looks that built her brand. But this time, fans say she didn’t just change her style she walked away from a whole belief system.

A year ago, Renner embraced Islam publicly. She wore the hijab, spoke about inner peace, and even took on tattoo removal in what she described as a “purification process.” For a moment, it looked like she was done chasing attention and instead chasing meaning. As someone who grew up watching public figures reinvent themselves like they’re flipping channels, I’ll admit I thought maybe this one would stick.

Spoiler: it didn’t.

A Slow Rewind on Instagram

Renner’s Instagram became a slow, very public unraveling of her modest phase. In May, she posted a clip in full hijab, talking about removing her tattoos. “I’m just going in a different direction,” she said. But that direction seemed to change weekly.

Within days, the conservative outfits started shrinking. First came slacks and a cardigan. Then a one-piece. Then more skin, less fabric, and finally, a full-blown throwback to her pre-Islam persona: bodycon dresses, high hems, and the unmistakable absence of a hijab.

One video sealed it. New hairstyle, no head covering, and a caption that read: “I don’t ask for permission or forgiveness, nor am I in the business of convincing.” That post alone sent fans into overdrive.

“Cosplaying a Faith for a Man”

Critics didn’t mince words. One follower wrote, “She couldn’t get enough attention covered up.” Another: “You literally cosplayed a faith for a man.”

That man? Muslim rapper Kevin Gates. Renner admitted the two got married in April and were divorced by late May. Less than two months. A flash marriage followed by an even faster fallout and apparently, a spiritual U-turn.

Now, the timeline’s under scrutiny. The headscarf, the modest outfits, the heartfelt posts about Islam… all seemed to coincide with her time with Gates. Once he exited, so did the hijab.

I’ve seen celebrities pivot, but this one felt unusually transactional.

“I Followed My Heart”

Renner’s defense hasn’t helped. In an interview, she said, “What I also will add is that I followed my heart, and that’s more than anyone can say in this world.” Fans didn’t buy it.

“If it was really in your heart, you would still be a follower regardless of who you’re with,” one commenter fired back.

She doubled down: “I don’t think anybody gets married to not stay married…I’m just doing a 90-day reset and focusing on myself.”

Fair. But a lot of people aren’t buying the “reset” framing, especially when faith was such a prominent part of her recent identity. For many watching, it wasn’t just an aesthetic shift it felt like a bait-and-switch.

Final Thought

People grow. People change. But when faith is part of that change, the stakes and scrutiny tend to rise. Renner says she followed her heart. Others say she followed the man. Either way, she’s back in the spotlight, and this time, it’s not because of what she’s wearing it’s what she took off.
